EtsyBloggers Blog Carnival – Dec 26th

26 Dec

Good morning every one! I hope you’ve enjoyed your holiday celebrations with family and friends – and if you haven’t had a chance to celebrate yet, I hope you’ve got some fun things planned!

This time of year is so hectic that we often lose sight of the things that are most important to us. My hope in this edition of the Blog Carnival you’re able to take some time to reflect on what’s important to you, and what traditions you treasure with your friends and family. For me, that means spending Christmas Eve with my extended family and Christmas Day with both sets of parents. Traditionally, we would gather at my Grandparents’ house for Christmas Eve festivities – aunts, uncles, and cousins – the whole shebang! We eat, drink, and be merry…we sing carols, laugh, and enjoy each others’ company. Eventually the kids – and frankly, the adults too – grow restless and wanted at the slew of beautifully wrapped gifts piled around the tree.

We know, however, we can’t open anything until we carry Baby Jesus to the manger scene and either sing ‘Away in a Manger’ or read Luke 2:8-14. Cheesy as it may seem, this is Grandma’s favorite part of the evening; she beams with delight as the smallest grandkids makes their way from the kitchen to the manger, the first carrying a small plate with a Hostess cupcake with a birthday candle.

Once this has taken place, the gifts are fair game…we’ve tried having a designated Santa to pass out the gift, but the kids aren’t down with that! It takes too long and there are too many to appease! This is some times my favorite time to grab the camera and spy on the guests – I’ve gotten the best pictures from watching for reactions as gifts are opened. Faces glow with delight, and the kids’ eyes are wide with glee.

As for New Year’s celebrations – we don’t do much on New Year’s Eve. We’re big hockey fans, so we attend the Komet’s game that night (the local team in the CHL). Some one in the family usually has a small gathering of friends and family, so we head that direction after the game – some times fancy dress, some times casual…I like to glam it up a little bit, truth be told :)

One of my favorite New Year’s traditions is getting together with some of my favorite family members on New Year’s Day to celebrate my birthday! If we’re not with them at midnight, my family and friends call and text to wish me a happy birthday…I try my best to stay awake, but sleep prevails more often than not! Later in the day we all meet up for lunch and some type of fun activity – ice skating, bowling, shopping, etc. It’s my favorite way to spend my birthday!

My sincere wish for you all is a safe and happy holiday season – may 2012 be a prosperous year for us all, and may you all be blessed with good health and friendship.

EtsyBloggers’ November Blog Carnival

17 Nov
This month’s EtsyBloggers’ blog carnival topic is: “November is National Novel Writing Month. As a blogger, have you ever though of crossing over and writing a book? Have you ever tried NaNoWriMo? Win or lose, tell us about your experience!”

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been interested in writing. I recall as a young child, creating newspapers with my cousins, writing the articles and weather reports and distributing the papers to family members and neighbors. Seems a bit cheesy thinking back, but it is definitely one of my favorite memories of my childhood.
In school I participated in the Young Author’s Conference; it was exciting to see my entry among all the others and I was so happy to receive a ribbon award, even if it was just a non-placement award. I also got to meet Happy the Hobo at that event, which was a huge deal for any kid growing up in my region!
As an adult, like most things, time slips by and writing isn’t as much of a priority. I have so many ideas for short stories but inevitably they never go anywhere. I am inspired in so many ways, and I want to share that with others, but I get stuck and discouraged too easily. I currently have two story lines running through my head – one is a children’s story with a steampunk theme, and the other was actually inspired by a Crate & Barrel Christmas catalog yesterday. I’m keeping the children’s story under wraps for the time being because I have high hopes for it one of these days (if I can even get beyond the first two paragraphs!) but I’d love to share the catalog-inspired story with you!

New Etsy Listings!

20 Oct

Over the next week or so, I will be listing some brand-spanking new items in my Etsy shop! These will be a new line of accessories exclusive to The Peach Martini – I love saying that!

Created out of inspiration from a bundle of merino wool blend felt I purchased from fellow Etstian BenzieBazaar and a recent trip to Harbor Springs, MI, this new line of accessories will appeal to a variety of tastes. Each piece is hand-cut, hand-stitched, and made with love :)

…so, without further ado, here is the first of (I hope!) many new listings for The Peach Martini!

Quick and Easy Christmas Gift/Party Favor!

19 Dec

‘Tis the season for holiday parties! I recently hosted my very first Cookie & Candy Exchange with my female relatives (mom, grandmother, aunts, and cousins) – it was quite fun! I’ll post more about the party another time, but right now I wanted to share an idea for a quick and easy to make party favor or Christmas gift! Who doesn’t love a quick and easy party favor!?

I found these cute, sturdy cookie cutters at the grocery store (also sold at Michael’s if you need an excuse to go there and check out the fun Christmas stuff!) – you can use any type of cutter, but 1) the price was exceptional for these ($0.99 each!!) and 2) they seemed like they would hold up better to being in the freezer for a while (read on, you’ll see what I mean!)

OK, so…get your cookie cutters all lined up. Wash them if you need to, but for the love of all things crafty, DRY THEM THOROUGHLY!!!!

While you’re waiting on the cutters to dry, gather your supplies -

  • vanilla candy coating/bark/whatever you want to call it
  • candy canes, crushed into small pieces (but not totally pulverised into a fine powder!)
  • peppermint extract
  • vegetable oil
  • glass measuring cup (or at least something microwave safe!)
  • something to stir with (I just used a high-tech plastic knife…glamorous, I know!)
  • cookie sheet, lined with waxed paper
  • Red decorating sugar or sprinkles, optional

Alrighty…now that we’ve gathered the ingredients, it’s time to get this party started!

Arrange your cookie cutters on the lined cookie sheet, and set them aside.

Cookie cutters, all lined up.

Cookie cutters, all lined up.

Place the candy melts or vanilla bark into the microwaveable bowl or glass measuring cup. If you are using the block of bark, break it into smaller pieces. I usually heat 4 bark bricks at a time, to keep it simple. Keep a close eye on the candy as you’re melting it, as it will scorch easily! I do 30-45 second intervals, stirring each time I open the microwave to check the consistency.  We will need to work quickly, but try to be cautious as the candy will be VERY hot!

Yummy, melty, candy.

Yummy, melty, candy.

Once the candy has melted, pour in a bit of vegetable oil. I start with a tablespoon, stir, and add more if needed. This will thin your candy – you want it pourable, but not super runny. DO NOT USE WATER!!!! Water + candy melts = DISASTER!! The water will cause your melted candy to separate and clump…this is a bad thing! This is why we need to make sure the cookie cutters are 100% dry too!

Right…now we’ve stirred our vegetable oil into the melted candy…we can add a little bit of pure peppermint extract. Just a very minimal amount – it’s potent stuff, people! I’d say start with 1/8 tsp, and add a little more if needed. Much like the water, if you add too much at once, it will cause the melted candy to coagulate. Not a pretty site! Once you’ve added enough peppermint extract to taste, add a few teaspoons of the crushed candy canes into the candy, and stir.

(This would be a perfect time to take a BIG gulp of wine…you know, to calm your nerves. :) )

Grab the melted candy and take your cute self over to the cookie cutters (it’s easier than bringing the cookie cutters to you, especially if you’ve had that gulp of wine!). With one hand, steady the cutter against the cookie sheet, and slowly pour the melted candy with candy cane bits into the cookie cutter. A tiny amount of melted candy may spew from the bottom, and that’s ok.

Sometimes the candy spews out the bottom...

Using a plastic knife or toothpick, GENTLY spread the candy into the nooks and crannies of your cutters…be careful so you don’t move the cutter around on the tray! Fill the cutters as full as you’d like – I used the 2/3 rule, as with muffin and cupcakes.

Fill cutters 2/3 full, then top with sprinkles or sugars.

Fill cutters 2/3 full, then top with sprinkles or sugars.

Once filled, sprinkle with the red decorating sugar or sprinkles, if desired.

Repeat this process until all the cookie cutters are filled. Then GENTLY place the cookie sheet in the freezer so the candy can harden – I left mine in there probably 30-45 minutes, then transferred to the fridge until I was ready to package them.

Pat yourselves on the back, and finish that wine!

Packaging is my favorite part, and I didn’t get any pictures of the finished product, because I was in a rush. I just used clear cello treat bags, tied with festive curling ribbon. You can use the patterned bags if you really need to save some time – they have some super cute ones for inexpensive at WalMart ($1.00 for 25 I think).

I promise you, this project is super easy, and the results are VERY well received. You’ll be whipping these up for all kinds of reasons – they’d make great teacher’s gifts, baby sitter gifts, hair dresser/dog walker/neighbor-you-don’t-know-very-well gift…and party favors!

If you decide to make some of these, or have another party favor idea, post a link to them in the comments – I’d love to see what you creative folks come up with!

EtsyBloggers – December 3rd Blog Carnival – Happy Holidays!

01 Dec

This edition of the EtsyBloggers Blog Carnival centers around the Holidays (amazingly enough!) – more specifically, I’ve opted to post about an item (or items, as the case may be) that I’ve created.

Rather than be a cheater-cheater-gingerbread-eater and repost the original, I’m going to actually be a good little girl (Santa is watching, you know!) and write a well-thought post on the matter…or as well-thought as it can be for a Tuesday morning with very little coffee in my system.

You might remember when I posted these little gift tags last year in my Etsy shop…these created quite a frenzy among family and friends – they completely wiped me out of them within a few days! And they are so addicting to make, that I just couldn’t help myself! I’ve accumulated quite a stash of them, but I’m having a hard time parting ways.

It all started as a way to decorate some Secret Santa packages at work…but being that I’m one of the very few crafty people in our area, it was a dead give away :) Every one raved about how cute they were, and how they thought it was more fun than the usual peel-and-stick tags so often used these days…I thought it might be a good way to help some one personalize their gifts, so I made a few. As I said, when I posted them online and showed them to relatives, they went nuts-o over them…so I made some more. (It was a win-win situation – they’re small enough that I can knock a few of them out in an hour without getting too bored or distracted, and there is enough detail involved that it satisfies my creative side too…I love it!) I really like that they’re small enough that you could decorate a gift card envelope to make it more personalized (I know some don’t feel gift cards are a thoughtful enough gift – this is a great way to add a little flare to them!), and I can really add as much or as little bling as I want and it won’t overpower the rest of the package. The hardest part though, is watching people unwrap their gifts and then crumpling them up and throwing them away – I just dive for them before they have the chance :)

Being that it’s already December 1st, and I’m frantic trying to get things organized for my First Annual Cookie Exchange on Saturday, and I have several handmade gifts I want to get working on, I’m not sure how many I’ll actually be posting in my Etsy shop…but rest assured, if you’re on my gift list, you’ll probably receive one of these :)

Hoosier Artisan Holiday Boutique – There’s Still Time!

30 Sep

Megan Martin, organizer of the Hoosier Artisan Holiday Boutique, informed me that there’s still time for vendors to apply for the show!!

“We’re delighted that our initial space for vendors filled so quickly – we’d like to provide even more fantastic Hoosier Artisans with the opportunity to sell their wares,” says Megan.  “We are still seeking a variety of artists and fine crafters from Indiana to participate in our single day event including (but not limited to!): painters, illustrators, photographers, paper crafters, woodworkers, sculptors, and makers of lovely handmade items.”

Megan indicates that the jewelry category is now closed and on a wait list, however lampworkers and metalsmiths are still invited to apply. She also requests that vendors indicate whether you are willing to be added to our waitlist when you submit an application. For a sneak peek at the artists who will be participating, visit the following link: http://HoosierArtisanBoutique.com/Artist-Preview.

To find more information about the event, or to complete the application, please visit http://HoosierArtisanBoutique.com.

The Hoosier Artisan Holiday Boutique – Saturday November 27th –  is in it’s 2nd year. It will be held at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Noblesville, IN.  This year’s event is being held to benefit Toys for Tots of Central Indiana. All patrons are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation.

C is For Cookie! and Chocolate! and Christmas!

24 Dec

I’ve received a lot of requests for the recipe for the chocolate mint cookies I posted about (at least I think I posted about them…I’m pretty sure I did…hmm…) earlier when my cousins came over…so, I thought I’d post the recipe for you all to enjoy. Maybe you’re off on break with your kiddos and want something easy and fun to do, or maybe you just want a secret stash of chocolate minty goodness for yourself  :)

Chocolate Mint Cookies

Chocolate Mint Cookies

 Chocolate Mint Cookies

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (dark chocolate or milk chocolate work great!)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 C water or milk (water works just fine, but milk might make the cookies a little more rich)
  • 1/2 stick of butter, melted
  • Andes Mints (whole) or Andes Mint Chips (one bag should be good)

 Preheat oven to 375°.

Blend all ingredients well; batter will be stiff. Drop rounded spoonfuls onto parchment lined cookie sheet. If you can form dough into a 1” diameter ball, great, if not, that’s ok! The dough will be a little sticky, so it’s hard to roll in your hands.

Bake for 10-12 minutes; remove from oven. Allow cookies to set for a couple seconds.

If you’re using the whole mints, just place the (unwrapped) candy on the cookie and allow to melt. If you’re using the chips, press the back of a teaspoon into the top of the cookie, like a thumbprint cookie. Fill the “thumbprint” with one teaspoon of the mint chips and allow to melt (add more or less as desired).

Use a toothpick to swirl the melted chocolates and mint so you get a lovely blend of mint green and chocolate on the cookie.

Place cookies in the refrigerator until the melted chocolate is set.

These package so nicely – they’re perfect for last minute gifts or cookies for Santa!! :)

Cookie Extravaganza…sort of…

16 Dec

My husband and I have the rest of the week off of work, to relax a bit, but mostly to finish up our Christmas shopping and what not before next week (NEXT WEEK people…NEXT WEEK IS CHRISTMAS!!! Who authorized that?!) We don’t really have any formal plans for our time away from the office, except for today and Friday. Today my cousins Emily (21) and Alyssa (19) came over to make cookies for Christmas Eve (more on that event later); Friday is our designated shopping day, followed by a hockey game that evening.

To start the morning off, I decided I’d take a break from cleaning up the kitchen and play with my new camera. Have I mentioned how wonderful my husband is??? I never really give him a list for Christmas – we always buy each other things throughout the year, so there isn’t much left for Christmas…and it doesn’t help that my birthday is a week after Christmas! As always, he finds some way to surprise me every year, and this year was no different. He got me a new camera for Christmas!! How do I know, you ask? It came in the mail yesterday…and we don’t do a very good job of keeping secrets around here! Anyway, I played with it at bit this morning…by the way, the Penguin ornament is the only ornament on our tree this year…I like to say I’m going for a minimalistic approach, but really I’m just being lazy. :)

As soon as they arrived and we did the usual visiting and chit-chatting, we got started on the cookies. As ambitious as we felt, we didn’t really make it too far! We started with the peanut butter kiss cookies (peanut butter cookies with a Hershey Kiss in the center). Those went together super fast, and we were pretty chuffed about the progress we were making.

We thought we were pretty clever by using the white chocolate Hershey Hugs :) It doesn’t take much for us to feel clever.

Emily wanted to make some sort of Andes Mint cookies…she wasn’t sure what the recipe was, so we kind of made one up using what we had on hand. Let me tell you, these things are AMAZING. Even my husband likes them, and he’s not a huge fan of sweets. They taste like a Thin Mint, only…better. Yeah, I said it…wanna fight about it? I wish I would have captured video of Emily trying to roll the cookie dough into little balls using her spoons…it was quite entertaining. But, you’ll have to settle for tantalizing pictures of the cookies instead :)

At this point, the ideas were flowing; we were certain that we could keep up our momentum and have several dozen cookies to show for our efforts. We took a break for lunch and decided while we were out to stop at the store to get more supplies (I failed to take a picture of what we had when we started…everything is still displayed on the counter, so maybe tomorrow I’ll get one…this will show you just how overboard we went then you can laugh at our thinking we needed more supplies!)

After a nice lunch at the South Side Soda Shop (it was feature on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, you know) and a trip dodging the Amish at the store, we returned home…much more lethargic and sleepy than before. In fact, on the drive to and from the diner, I noticed my two cookie elves dozing off in the back of the car! We contemplated starting another batch of cookies, or working on the chocolate covered pretzels, but my elves were increasingly weary. Their eyes drooped, and their spirits snoozed. After packing them up with some cookies to share with their men-elves, I sent them on their way before it got too dark.

I decided to make another batch of the chocolate mint cookies…so tasty – uh, I mean – so easy…yeah, that’s it. Easy. And Tasty. Mmm….minty….melty….mmmm….*drools*

My day is coming to a close as the Chicago Blackhawks start the 3rd period leading St. Louis 3-0. Yes, I like the Blackhawks…my husband likes the Pens…we are a house divided. :) I think his Penguin needs a friend on that tree, don’t you?
